“Good. Because I want to do it again.” I briefly frowned. “I didn’t know you were a virgin. “She started to look flustered.

“It was how I wanted it to go. Would that have changed things?”

I closed the rest of the distance between us and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “No, because you could’ve told me to stop.”

She softly smiled. “Would you have?”

I smirked. “No.” I took a moment to look around her apartment, which was overrun with boxes. “You want to tell me why you’ve missed my class not once, but twice now? A required class at that.”

She shrugged, walking over to a nearby couch and sitting. She was quiet a moment before she spoke. “I don’t want to do it. I don’t think I ever did. I thought becoming a doctor would make me feel closer to my birth family somehow. I changed my last name from Donaldson to Clyper. They don’t even know I’m here.” Oh, they know you’re here, I thought. “But…” she suddenly turned to me. “Why did you become a doctor?”

I was taken aback by the sudden change in topic and cleared my throat. “I wanted to help people in need. People that probably were taken advantage of, and didn’t have the voice or means to fight for themselves, because they were looked down upon.” I quickly straightened, needing to veer the topic elsewhere.

“Why the change in heart? Your academics are stellar. You could do anything.”

“But that’s the thing. I could do anything. I want to do what I want to do, not what I’m told to do.”

I froze and swallowed thickly before turning to her. “What do you mean by that?” She looked away as she pulled on the thread of her pants. She slowly shook her head as she turned away from me. No. Fuck no. I needed to know what she meant by that. “Alegra, look at me,” I said more sharply than I meant. “What did you mean by that?”

She sighed. “I just felt pressured to go to medical school and to come to this particular school. Like it was my destiny or something.”

I felt my jaw ticking. Because it was her fucking destiny. It was her destiny to keep doing whatever the hell it was the Clyper’s were doing. They were worth millions of dollars. Alegra had no idea the true net worth of her name. I looked around the small apartment that my bathroom was most likely bigger than. If she had an inkling of the amount of money she was truly worth, she would lose her shit. All from medical experimentations and the black market. Tell her.

“It’s stupid. I think it’s just jitters or something. The stress of trying to plan out a future.” She suddenly stopped and started laughing. “I fucked my teacher last night.”

  I grinned. “Consensual. I hope.”

She snuggled against me. “Very consensual.”

And just like that, my decision was made. I couldn’t have her killed. But I had to find a way to get rid of her.

“What can I do for you, Killian?” Marcus didn’t even bother looking up at me as I barged into his office. He was expecting me. He knew I’d be there.

  “I want Alegra left alone.”

“Is that what you want, Killian?”

I knew what he was about to do. What he always did. The part where he goaded me. Made me feel like shit, and full of guilt. “She doesn’t want to be a doctor, Marcus. I spoke to her. She doesn’t want that life.”

He was quiet as he recapped his pen. “That’s not what I asked you, Killian. Allow me to repeat the question, which you know I don’t like doing. Is that what you want, Killian?”

I met his gaze head-on. “Yes.”

He slowly stood up and gave me a slight nod. “I figured you would fall for her. Why wouldn’t you? She’s beautiful. I’m sure her pussy is nice and tight, isn’t it?”

I felt my hands balling into fists as my anger started to rise. The fucking prick. He lightly chuckled, as he waved a hand at me. “I’ll see what I can do, but she was never the problem, Killian.” I studied him as he made his way around his desk, over to a sidebar, and poured himself a drink. “Alegra was never the problem. The problem was you.”

  I cocked my head. “Explain.”

“The Clyper’s make millions of dollars doing illegal organ trading on the black market. Saving lives, as they took from the poor because they could. Especially if it was their families and close friends in danger. They would do anything to help. Someone needed a baby. They made it happen. As long as backs were turned, and the jobs were done, it was fine.”

I shook my head. “You’re not making any sense, what the fuck does this have to do with me?”

“You’re an excellent surgeon, Killian. Your skills are valuable.”

I ran my hand through my hair, getting even more fucking frustrated than before. Marcus was doing his usual babble bullshit that made no sense whatsoever. I wasn’t going to sit here and entertain this conversation any longer than I had to. I had said what I wanted to say, and that was it.

“They want to come to an agreement. They’re willing to settle our differences. One for one.”

I laughed. “Their threats mean shit to me, and you know it. Besides, what does it matter? The law is on their side.”

I watched as Marcus finished his drink. “They want you to work for them. Think of it as a trade of sorts.”

I crossed my arms. “Why the fuck would I want to work for them? What could they possibly have, that would make me want to work for the fucking Clyper’s?”

Marcus stared at me, and suddenly, I felt the blood drain from my face. He didn’t need to say it. He didn’t need to say a single word. It wasn’t what they had. It was who they had. The only member of my family, aside from Marcus that I would give my soul for. They had just made the ultimate checkmate. They knew this would destroy me. It was bad enough that they took my parents and my sister. But now, the one last remaining person I was connected to. The one last person I kept hidden and safe. They didn’t want Alegra for an even trade. They wanted me, for one person.

  My brother.
